A day at Summer Camp

I had the incredible opportunity to attend a day of Happy Orcas Adventure Camp! It was amazing to be an observer of children outdoors, learning, and free of electronics. My friend Tori Ayers owns Dragonfly Kayak Tours in Bellingham, Wa. For years she has been offering everything form bioluminescence tours, to overnight Kayak trips. Her sunset paddles are the perfect way to experience the Salish Sea. This year she expanded yet again, and hosted a kids adventure summer camp! It's one week, 6 hours a day, and cram packed with learning and fun!

They started the day with light stretching to warm up their muscles, then we did introductions (I joined them on a Monday, so it was a new group.) Next, Tori brought our the paddles and used fun tactics to help the kids feel comfortable with them. The slackline was up next, and it's not as easy as it looks. After a lunch break, we hiked our way down to the water to prepare for kayaking. I loved how the camp counselors used every opportunity to teach the children about their surroundings, and respect for nature. The children were expected to help every step of the way. They carried kayaks, organized gear, and applied their sunscreen. It's amazing what children learn when you include them, and make it fun!

The rest of the day was filled with time on and in the water, and more adventures than I could keep up with! I will definitely be sending my girls to this camp next year, and I'll never forget the amazing opportunity I had to go to camp for a day.
